If you are still tired after a full night’s sleep, you could be suffering from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a potentially serious condition in which you stop and start breathing many times during the night without even knowing it.

Some of the symptoms of sleep apnea are loud snoring, awakening with dry mouth, morning headaches, irritability, difficulty staying asleep, and excessive feelings of sleepiness during the day.

There are certain factors that put you at risk for sleep apnea including obesity, smoking, age, family history, and use of alcohol or sedatives.

Your doctor can evaluate your signs and symptoms and may require you to be evaluated overnight at a sleep center or take an in-home sleep test. If your sleep apnea is mild, your doctor may recommend only lifestyle changes such as losing weight or quitting smoking. For more severe cases of sleep apnea, your doctor may prescribe the use of a CPAP machine that is designed to deliver air pressure through a mask while you sleep.
